a father’s career, 2025.
My father spent his life working as a gaffer and lighting technician in Film and Television just as his father and his Grandfather did. His career revolved around being behind the scenes, working in the Hollywood industry for over 40 years. My dad’s career has heavily influenced my artistic path in photography. Collaborating with him on set, learning lighting techniques, and assisting him while shooting, his eye for lighting has reflected in my own work. I made this piece to shine the light on my father as he is nearing retirement. I feel his work, and many others who put extreme efforts into making movies and television, do not get as much recognition as deserved. I have used one of his work ID cards from the Sunset Hollywood studios as a physical symbol of him and his career. Creating a set itself, then lighting the frame to represent the act of putting him in front of the camera. While turning lighting equipment into the art piece itself. I have made this piece about generational work, how it has passed from my great grandfather to my grandfather to my father then to me. Recognizing the hard work from my family’s dedication to the film industry.
